The Good People of Languedoc

It’s 1262 AD, we’re in the town of Quillan in Languedoc. Before the wars came, Quillan used to be quite a rich town because of it’s location right by the river Aude and more importantly on a crossroads where multiple Corbiery mountain trails meet. Therefore, unlike other nearby towns, Quillan didn’t earn much of its wealth from agriculture and vineyards but rather from the trade. Although the local market isn’t as big as it used to be before the war there is still quite a lot of merchants and peasants coming from afar.

The castle and the town below belong to the family de Quillan. They were never involved with Cathars but didn’t help the catholisation and inquisition pursuing them either. There’s no particular evidence that the inquisition or the king could use to blame them, but they’re definitely not the most popular family in France. However, de Quillan is and old Occitan family with many bonds to the shire, whereas other lords from nearby manors who came to the shire during the reign of the earl Simon Montfort, are sort of immigrants.

Thus for the time being, there is the family of lords de Quillan in Quillan manor of course, then also the group of Templars who have come to the wedding and have certain links to the family as well. There are also two Dominican friars amongst the visitors who have come to conduct an inquisitional investigation, for the local priest had been anonymously accused of impious and disgraceful behaviour. Quillan has also offered a temporary shelter for nuns from the nearby Benedictine abbey that had been destroyed during the wars.

Then there are also other citizens who live in the town, of course. For special occasions like wedding, for example, even peasants, merchants and other people from vicinity come to the town.

Agnes (28)

Agnes is the maid of Isabela de Mirepoix. She does her best to provide care and comfort to her lady. That, however, doesn’t prevent her from having her own life. A life that can be full of wonders.

    for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;

    apart from you I have no good thing.” Psalm 16

Gaspar has troubles with Nazair, the warden, because Nazair doesn’t pay what he’s promised to pay. Gaspar’s been rather silent lately, there’s likely more to it that worries him, than he tells her. If only there was . But who would have listened to the peasants?

For I am the Lord your God

    who takes hold of your right hand

and says to you, Do not fear;

    I will help you Isaiah 41,13

Francois’s housekeeper. She’d helped raising up the two young lords but then for some reason she was dismissed from the service. Francois, though, fell under her spell. He admires her as a woman who can handle difficult situations, who doesn’t fear anything and has no prejudice. Long story short, to Francois she’s the person to whom he can pass his troubles.

Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1,4

The warden’s son. He’s a smart and bright boy. He doesn’t get on particularly well with his parents and even despises them a bit. He’s a catholic a has stronger faith than both of his parents. His father taught him to write, read and count. And once he’s grown a little older and wiser he got pretty good idea how to make money.

Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent?

    Who may live on your holy mountain?

The one whose walk is blameless,

    who does what is righteous,

    who speaks the truth from their heart;

whose tongue utters no slander,

    who does no wrong to a neighbor,

    and casts no slur on others;

who despises a vile person

    but honors those who fear the Lord;

who keeps an oath even when it hurts,

    and does not change their mind;

Do not envy the wicked,

    do not desire their company;

for their hearts plot violence,

    and their lips talk about making trouble. Proverbs 24

Arnaud is an old experienced Dominican friar. One of contemporary witnesses of St. Dominic. He looks after his younger fellow friar and is also in charge of the investigation. He’s pious, zealous and unyielding man. He longs for a pure and right Church and intends to obliterate all the heretics. He’s been in the holy inquisitors‘ office for years now and he’s been pursuing his task thoroughly and with all due respect.

Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem. For the king of Babylon will stop at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He will cast lots with arrows, he will consult his idols, he will examine the liver. Ezekiel. 21, 20-21

Audrey (29)

This girl is a stranger to Quillan. She belongs with the group of comedians invited to the wedding by the nobility. If there’s a party with music and dance, Audrey is likely there as well.

    in the image of God he created them;

    male and female he created them. Genesis 1, 27

 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.. Jan 3:20

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Those who have spoken to him say that he’s a little mad and that he still hasn’t reconciled himself with the loss of his family.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter;

    to search out a matter is the glory of kings. Proverbs 25, 2

Bertrand de Rennes

Old and wise Templar knight, lord of the Rennes-le-Chateau manor and a relative of lords de Quillan. He’s seen so much cruelty and atrocity that no man can imagine. He’d rather finally settle, take care of his manor and start a family. Well, that’s probably not going to happen but he’s getting fed up being a soldier. He was there at the siege of Montsegur and he was one of those who decided that the Templars would not be involved. It seems to Bertrand that this inquisition rampage is silly and only wreaks havoc. Christians should protect their own land from infidels in the first place, rather than abusing the Crusade idea to seek profit within the christian world itself. Dominicans are group of dumb barefoot agitators in his eyes. This is definitely not what religious orders should look like.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,

    who find great delight in his commands.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,

    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;

    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

Psalm 112, 1, 4 and 8

Braide is the wife of Nazair, the warden. It’s been a good marriage just as she planned. Her husband is good at making money and she, on the other hand, is good at spending them. Nazair is a bore but the same thing doesn’t apply for Braide. There must be a balance in the world.

Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.

Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord chase them. Psalm 35, 4-5

Luckily, there’s been enough work lately to keep them both busy, so that there’s no time for Hugues to be too pushy. Anyways, she’s got to figure out what to do, soon. Add to that the troubles with Mathilde!

But I tell you, in this you are not right,

    for God is greater than any mortal.

Why do you complain to him

    that he responds to no one’s words?

For God does speak—now one way, now another—

    though no one perceives it. Job 33, 12-14

She can’t rely on her brother too much, they like each other for sure, but they don’t have much sympathy for each other.

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. Timothy 4:12-16

Eleanor de Quillan(42)

Mother of Roger and the widowed lady of the Quillan manor. Like many other local people she’s a catholic but not zealous in particular, rather lukewarm and by chance on the right side of the barricade. Bertrand, the templar knight, is the best friend of her deceased husband. (Who died under unclear circumstances during the wars). Eleanor is the pragmatic head of the family, interested in religion only as far as politics demand. She tolerates the Dominicans in her manor but isn’t particularly keen about that. On the other hand, she finds the Templars’ visit pleasurable. They are the men to her taste. She especially likes the older one. If only he wasn’t under his religious vows. Jacques and Roger are both well mannered and Eleanor is willing to do all sorts of things to keep the manor in their hands.

When she saw that she waited in vain,

    that her hope was lost,

she took another of her cubs

    and made him a young lion.

He prowled among the lions;

    he became a young lion,

and he learned to catch prey;

    he devoured men,

They intend to stay in Quillan for a while, for the local lords’ wedding shall likely bring many potential customers and business opportunities. Estefania considers this visit a potential start-off step to higher level of business.

So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10, 26 and 28

If only there was someone to take a proper care of it…And that someone could be Hugues!

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill.
