The Good People of Languedoc

It’s 1262 AD, we’re in the town of Quillan in Languedoc. Before the wars came, Quillan used to be quite a rich town because of it’s location right by the river Aude and more importantly on a crossroads where multiple Corbiery mountain trails meet. Therefore, unlike other nearby towns, Quillan didn’t earn much of its wealth from agriculture and vineyards but rather from the trade. Although the local market isn’t as big as it used to be before the war there is still quite a lot of merchants and peasants coming from afar.

The castle and the town below belong to the family de Quillan. They were never involved with Cathars but didn’t help the catholisation and inquisition pursuing them either. There’s no particular evidence that the inquisition or the king could use to blame them, but they’re definitely not the most popular family in France. However, de Quillan is and old Occitan family with many bonds to the shire, whereas other lords from nearby manors who came to the shire during the reign of the earl Simon Montfort, are sort of immigrants.

Thus for the time being, there is the family of lords de Quillan in Quillan manor of course, then also the group of Templars who have come to the wedding and have certain links to the family as well. There are also two Dominican friars amongst the visitors who have come to conduct an inquisitional investigation, for the local priest had been anonymously accused of impious and disgraceful behaviour. Quillan has also offered a temporary shelter for nuns from the nearby Benedictine abbey that had been destroyed during the wars.

Then there are also other citizens who live in the town, of course. For special occasions like wedding, for example, even peasants, merchants and other people from vicinity come to the town.

He’s been in the holy inquisitors‘ office for years now and he’s been pursuing his task thoroughly and with all due respect.

Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem. He’d rather finally settle, take care of his manor and start a family. Well, that’s probably not going to happen but he’s getting fed up being a soldier. He was there at the siege of Montsegur and he was one of those who decided that the Templars would not be involved. It seems to Bertrand that this inquisition rampage is silly and only wreaks havoc. Christians should protect their own land from infidels in the first place, rather than abusing the Crusade idea to seek profit within the christian world itself. Dominicans are group of dumb barefoot agitators in his eyes. This is definitely not what religious orders should look like.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,

    who find great delight in his commands.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,

    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. Timothy 4:12-16

On the other hand, she finds the Templars’ visit pleasurable. They are the men to her taste. She especially likes the older one. If only he wasn’t under his religious vows. Jacques and Roger are both well mannered and Eleanor is willing to do all sorts of things to keep the manor in their hands.

When she saw that she waited in vain,

    that her hope was lost,

she took another of her cubs

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. It may seem as if the distribution of mysticism and adventure among characters were unequal and that some are completely unattractive. However, that is because we sometimes cannot disclose everything from their past. In fact we’ve done our best to make every character interesting. Each has its own game, goal, motivation and secrets. The point is that the land is shortly after the holy wars, where many hide their identity or at least religion. During the wars many precious things and even people were lost. As far as identity is concerned, you can never be absolutely sure about people’s identity, maybe unless it’s your children. And that’s particularly true in people who’s story and motivation seems trivial. This seemingly serene town full of good ordinary people may in fact hide many extraordinary stories.
